Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber; December 28, 1922)[1] is an American comic book writer, editor, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.
With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and many other fictional characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters[2] and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books.[3] In addition, he headed the first major successful challenge to the industry's draconian censorship organization, the Comics Code Authority and forced it to reform its policies.[citation needed] Lee subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.
He is unrelated to the advertising executive Stanley R. Lee, who wrote the novels Dunn's Conundrum (1985) and The God Project (1990) under the name "Stan Lee".[4]

[edit] Biography

[edit] Early life and career
He was born in New York City, New York, in the apartment of his Romanian-born Jewish immigrant parents, Celia (née Solomon) and Jack Lieber,[5] at the corner of West 98th Street and West End Avenue in Manhattan.[1] His father, trained as a dress cutter, worked only sporadically after the Great Depression, and the family moved further uptown to Fort Washington Avenue,[6] in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights. When Lee was nearly 9, his only sibling, brother Larry Lieber, was born. By the time Lee was in his teens, the family was living in a one-bedroom apartment at 1720 University Avenue in The Bronx. Lee described it as "a third-floor apartment facing out back", with him and his brother sharing a bedroom and his parents using a foldout couch.[7]
Lee attended DeWitt Clinton High School in The Bronx,[8] where his family had moved next. A voracious reader who enjoyed writing as a teen, he worked such part-time jobs as writing obituaries for a news service and press releases for the National Tuberculosis Center; delivering sandwiches for the Jack May pharmacy to offices in Rockefeller Center; working as an office boy for a trouser manufacturer; ushering at the Rivoli Theater on Broadway; and selling subscriptions to the New York Herald Tribune newspaper. He graduated high school early, at age 16½ in 1939, and joined the WPA Federal Theatre Project.

With the help of his uncle, Robbie Solomon, [9] Lee became an assistant at the new Timely Comics division of pulp magazine and comic-book publisher Martin Goodman's company. Timely, by the 1960s, would evolve into Marvel Comics. Lee, whose cousin Jean[10] was Goodman's wife, was formally hired by Timely editor Joe Simon.[11]
Young Stanley Lieber's first published work, the text filler "Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge" in Captain America Comics #3 (May 1941), used the pseudonym "Stan Lee", which years later he would adopt as his legal name. Lee later explained in his autobiography and numerous other sources that he had intended to save his given name for more literary work. This initial story also introduced Captain America's trademark ricocheting shield-toss, which immediately became one of the character's signatures.[12]
He graduated from writing filler to actual comics with a backup feature, "'Headline' Hunter, Foreign Correspondent", two issues later. Lee's first superhero co-creation was the Destroyer, in Mystic Comics #6 (Aug. 1941). Other characters he created during this period fans and historians call the Golden Age of comics include Jack Frost, debuting in USA Comics #1 (Aug. 1941), and Father Time, debuting in Captain America Comics #6 (Aug. 1941).[13]
When Simon and his creative partner Jack Kirby left late in 1941, following a dispute with Goodman, the 30-year-old publisher installed Lee, just under 19 years old, as interim editor.[14] The youngster showed a knack for the business that led him to remain as the comic-book division's editor-in-chief, as well as art director for much of that time, until 1972, when he would succeed Goodman as publisher.[15][16]
Lee entered the United States Army in early 1942 and served stateside in the Signal Corps, writing manuals, training films, and slogans, and occasionally cartooning. His military classification, he says, was "playwright"; he adds that only nine men in the U.S. Army were given that title.[17] Vincent Fago, editor of Timely's "animation comics" section, which put out humor and funny animal comics, filled in until Lee returned from his World War II military service in 1945. From then through 1947, he and his wife, Joan Clayton Boocock, rented the top floor of a brownstone in the East 90s in Manhattan.[18] They later bought two-story, three-bedroom home at 1084 West Broadway, in Woodmere, New York, on Long Island, living there from 1949 to 1952.[19] The family, which by this time included daughter Joan Celia, bought a home at 226 Richards Lane in the Long Island town of Hewlett Harbor, New York, living there from 1952 to 1980,[20] including the 1960s period when Lee and his artist collaborators would revolutionize comic books.
In the mid-1950s, by which time the company was now generally known as Atlas Comics, Lee wrote stories in a variety of genres including romance, Westerns, humor, science fiction, medieval adventure, horror and suspense. By the end of the decade, Lee had become dissatisfied with his career and considered quitting the field.[21][22]

[edit] Marvel revolution
In the late 1950s, DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz revived the superhero genre and experienced a significant success with its updated version of the Flash, and later with super-team the Justice League of America. In response, publisher Martin Goodman assigned Lee to create a new superhero team. Lee's wife urged him to experiment with stories he preferred, since he was planning on changing careers and had nothing to lose.[21][22]
Lee acted on that advice, giving his superheroes a flawed humanity, a change from the ideal archetypes that were typically written for pre-teens. His heroes could have bad tempers, melancholy fits, vanity, greed, etc. They bickered amongst themselves, worried about paying their bills and impressing girlfriends, and even were sometimes physically ill. Before him, most superheroes were idealistically perfect people with no serious, lasting problems.[23]
The first superhero group Lee and artist Jack Kirby created was the Fantastic Four. Their immediate popularity led Lee and Marvel's illustrators to produce a cavalcade of new titles. With Kirby, Lee created the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Mighty Thor and the X-Men; with Bill Everett, Daredevil; and with Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange and Marvel's most successful character, Spider-Man.
Comics historian Peter Sanderson wrote that in the 1960s,

DC was the equivalent of the big Hollywood studios: After the brilliance of DC's reinvention of the superhero ... in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it had run into a creative drought by the decade's end. There was a new audience for comics now, and it wasn't just the little kids that traditionally had read the books. The Marvel of the 1960s was in its own way the counterpart of the French New Wave.... Marvel was pioneering new methods of comics storytelling and characterization, addressing more serious themes, and in the process keeping and attracting readers in their teens and beyond. Moreover, among this new generation of readers were people who wanted to write or draw comics themselves, within the new style that Marvel had pioneered, and push the creative envelope still further.[24]

Stan Lee's Marvel revolution extended beyond the characters and storylines to the way in which comic books engaged the readership and built a sense of community between fans and creators.[citation needed] Lee introduced the practice of including a credit panel on the splash page of each story, naming not just the writer and penciller but also the inker and letterer. Regular news about Marvel staff members and upcoming storylines was presented on the Bullpen Bulletins page, which (like the letter columns that appeared in each title) was written in a friendly, chatty style.

Throughout the 1960s, Lee scripted, art-directed, and edited most of Marvel's series, moderated the letters pages, wrote a monthly column called "Stan's Soapbox," and wrote endless promotional copy, often signing off with his trademark phrase "Excelsior!" (which is also the New York state motto). To maintain his taxing workload, yet still meet deadlines, he used a system that was used previously by various comic-book studios, but due to Lee's success with it, became known as the "Marvel Method" or "Marvel style" of comic-book creation. Typically, Lee would brainstorm a story with the artist and then prepare a brief synopsis rather than a full script. Based on the synopsis, the artist would fill the allotted number of pages by determining and drawing the panel-to-panel storytelling. After the artist turned in penciled pages, Lee would write the word balloons and captions, and then oversee the lettering and coloring. In effect, the artists were co-plotters, whose collaborative first drafts Lee built upon.
Because of this system, the exact division of creative credits on Lee's comics has been disputed, especially in cases of comics drawn by Kirby and Ditko. Similarly, Lee shares co-creator credit with Kirby on the two Fantastic Four films, while also sharing the same credit with Ditko with the Spider-Man feature film series.
In 1971, Lee indirectly reformed the Comics Code. The US Department of Health, Education and Welfare asked Lee to write a story about the dangers of drugs and Lee wrote a story in which Spider-Man's best friend becomes addicted to pills. The three-part story was slated to be published in Amazing Spider-Man #96-98, but the Comics Code Authority refused it because it depicted drug use; the story context was considered irrelevant.[citation needed] With his publisher's approval, Lee published the comics without the CCA seal. The comics sold well and Marvel won praise for its socially conscious efforts.[citation needed] The CCA subsequently loosened the Code to permit negative depictions of drugs, among other new freedoms.[citation needed]
Lee also supported using comic books to provide some measure of social commentary about the real world, often dealing with racism and bigotry. "Stan's Soapbox", besides promoting an upcoming comic book project, also addressed issues of discrimination, intolerance, or prejudice.[citation needed] In addition, Lee took to using sophisticated vocabulary for the stories' dialogue to encourage readers to learn new words. Lee has justified this by saying: "If a kid has to go to a dictionary, that's not the worst thing that could happen."[citation needed]

[edit] Later career

Lee at the 1973 San Diego Comic Con.
In later years, Lee became a figurehead and public face for Marvel Comics. He made appearances at comic book conventions around America, lecturing at colleges and participating in panel discussions, and by now owning a vacation home on Cutler Lane in Remsenburg, New York[25] and, from 1975 to 1980, a two-bedroom condominium on the 14th floor of 220 East 63rd Street in Manhattan.[26] He moved to California in 1981 to develop Marvel's TV and movie properties. He has been an executive producer for, and has made cameo appearances in Marvel film adaptations and other movies. He and his wife bought a home in West Hollywood, California previously owned by comedian Jack Benny's radio announcer, Don Wilson.[27] Lee was briefly president of the entire company, but soon stepped down to become publisher instead, finding that being president was too much about numbers and finance and not enough about the creative process he enjoyed.[1]
Later in the 1990s, Lee befriended former lawyer Peter Paul, who supervised the negotiation of a non-exclusive contract with Marvel Comics for the first time in Lee's lifetime employment with Marvel.[citation needed] This enabled Paul and Lee to start a new Internet-based superhero creation, production and marketing studio, Stan Lee Media, in 1998. It grew to 165 people and went public, but near the end of 2000, investigators discovered illegal stock manipulation by Paul and corporate officer Stephan Gordon.[28] Stan Lee Media filed for bankruptcy in February 2001, and Paul fled to São Paulo, Brazil.[29][30] He was extradited back to the U.S., and pled guilty to violating SEC Rule 10b-5 in connection with trading of his stock in Stan Lee Media.[31][32] Lee was never implicated in the scheme.
Some of the Stan Lee Media projects included the animated Web series The 7th Portal where he voiced the character Izayus; The Drifter; and The Accuser. The 7th Portal characters were licensed to an interactive 3-D film attraction in four Paramount theme parks.
In the 2000s, Lee did his first work for DC Comics, launching the Just Imagine... series, in which Lee reimagined the DC superheroes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash.
Lee created the risqué animated superhero series Stripperella for Spike TV. In 2004, he announced plans to collaborate with Hugh Hefner on a similar superhero cartoon featuring Playboy Playmates.[citation needed] He also announced a superhero program that would feature Ringo Starr, the former Beatle, as the lead character.[33] Additionally, in August of that year, Lee announced the launch of Stan Lee's Sunday Comics,[34] hosted by Komikwerks.com, where monthly subscribers could read a new, updated comic and "Stan's Soapbox" every Sunday. The column has not been updated since Feb. 15, 2005.
In 2005, Lee, Gill Champion and Arthur Lieberman formed POW! (Purveyors of Wonder) Entertainment to develop film, television and video game properties. The first film produced by POW! was the TV movie Lightspeed (also advertised as Stan Lee's Lightspeed), which aired on the Sci Fi Channel on July 26, 2006.[citation needed] POW! president and CEO Champion said in 2005 that Lee was creating a new superhero, Foreverman, for a Paramount Pictures movie, in tandem with producer Robert Evans and Idiom Films, with Peter Briggs hired to collaborate with Lee on the screenplay.[35]
In 2005, Lee filed a lawsuit against Marvel for his unpaid share of profits from Marvel movies, winning a settlement of more than $10 million.[citation needed]
In 2006, Marvel commemorated Lee's 65 years with the company by publishing a series of one-shot comics starring Lee himself meeting and interacting with many of his co-creations, including Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, the Thing, Silver Surfer and Doctor Doom. These comics also featured short pieces by such comics creators as Joss Whedon and Fred Hembeck, as well as reprints of classic Lee-written adventures.
In 2007, POW! Entertainment started a series of direct-to-DVD animated films under the Stan Lee Presents banner. Each film focuses on a new superhero, created by Stan Lee for the series. The first two releases were Mosaic and The Condor.
In June 2007, Walt Disney Studios entered into an exclusive multi-year first look deal with Stan Lee and POW! Entertainment. "It's like the realization of a dream. Ever since I was a young boy, Disney represented the best and most exciting film fare to me. ... I look forward with indescribable enthusiasm to being a part of that world and contributing whatever I can to keep the legend alive and growing," said Lee.[36]
On March 15, 2007, Stan Lee Media's new President Jim Nesfield filed a lawsuit against Marvel Entertainment for $5 billion, claiming that the company is co-owner of the characters that Lee created for Marvel.[37]
On June 9, 2007, Stan Lee Media sued Stan Lee, his newer company, POW Entertainment, subsidiary QED Entertainment, and other former Stan Lee Media staff at POW.[38]
In 2008, Lee wrote humorous captions for the political fumetti book Stan Lee Presents Election Daze: What Are They Really Saying?.[39]
In April 2008, at the NYCC, Viz Media announced that their parent company Shueisha would be debuting the prologue chapter of Karakuridōji Ultimo, a collaborative effort between Stan Lee and Shaman King creator Hiroyuki Takei.[40]
Brighton Partners and Rainmaker Animation announced in April 2008 a partnership with Lee's POW! Entertainment to produce a CGI film series, "Legion of 5".[41] That same month, Virgin Comics announced Lee would create a line of superhero comics for that company.[42] He is also working on a TV adaptation of the novel Hero.[43]

[edit] Personal life
On December 5, 1947, Lee married Joan Clayton. The couple had two children: Joan Celia "J.C." Lee in 1950 and Jan Lee, who died three days after delivery in 1953.[citation needed]

[edit] Interests
Lee's favorite authors include Stephen King, H. G. Wells, Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and Harlan Ellison.[44]

[edit] Awards and honors
Lee has received several awards for his work, including being formally inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995.
He is among the celebrities scheduled to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008.[45]
On November 17, 2008, Stan Lee was awarded the National Medal of Arts.[46][47]

The Fantastic Four #10 (Jan. 1963): Cover art by Kirby & Dick Ayers.
Stan Lee and his collaborator Jack Kirby appear as themselves in The Fantastic Four #10 (Jan. 1963), the first of several appearances within the fictional Marvel Universe.[48] The two are depicted as similar to their real-world counterparts, creating comic books based on the "real" adventures of the Fantastic Four.
Kirby, during his years of working for DC Comics in the 1970s, created the character Funky Flashman as a possible parody of Stan Lee.[citation needed] With his hyperbolic speech pattern, gaudy toupee, and hip '70s-Manhattan style beard (as Lee sported at the time) this ne'er-do-well charlatan first appeared in the pages of Mister Miracle.
Kirby later portrayed himself, Lee, production executive Sol Brodsky, and Lee's secretary Flo Steinberg as superheroes in What If #11, "What If the Marvel Bullpen Had Become the Fantastic Four?", in which Lee played the part of Mister Fantastic. Lee has also made numerous cameo appearances in many Marvel titles, appearing in audiences and crowds at many characters' ceremonies and parties, and hosting an old-soldiers reunion in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #100 (July 1972). Lee appeared, unnamed, as the priest at Luke Cage and Jessica Jones' wedding in New Avengers Annual #1. He pays his respects to Karen Page at her funeral in the Daredevil "Guardian Devil" story arc,[volume & issue needed] and appears in The Amazing Spider-Man (June 1977).
In Alan Moore's satirical miniseries 1963, based on numerous Marvel characters of the 1960s, Moore's alter ego "Affable Al" parodies Lee and his allegedly unfair treatment of artists.[citation needed]
The "Young Dan Pussey" stories by Daniel Clowes, collected in Pussey!, feature an exploitative publisher who relies on Lee's gung-ho style and "Bullpen" mythology to motivate his stable of naive and underpaid creators; the stories mainly satirize the state of mainstream comics in the 1990s, but also the subculture of young superhero fans that Lee helped to create.
In Marvel's 1991 comic book adaptation of game Double Dragon, a character modeled after Stan Lee was specifically created for the comic and is introduced as the father of the protagonists, Billy and Jimmy Lee. The character is only referred by his first name, Stan, although the play on his name is obvious when one considers the Lee brothers' surname.
In X-Play on the cable network G4, the character "Roger, the Stan Lee Experience" - dubbed "the fifth-best-thing next to Stan Lee" - is a foul-mouthed, perverted stand-up comic parody of Lee. Roger's segments normally consist of him describing details of numerous unspeakable adult encounters, usually involving the wife of another Marvel veteran, Jack Kirby, with each encounter somehow leading to the creation of a well-known Marvel character.
In Marvel's July 1997 "Flashback" event, a top-hatted caricature of Lee as a ringmaster introduced stories which detailed events in Marvel characters' lives before they became superheroes, in special "-1" editions of many Marvel titles. The "ringmaster" depiction of Lee was originally from Generation X #17 (July 1996), where the character narrated a story set primarily in an abandoned circus. Though the story itself was written by Scott Lobdell, the narration by "Ringmaster Stan" was written by Lee himself, and the character was drawn in that issue by Chris Bachalo. Bachalo's depiction of "Ringmaster Stan" was later used in the heading of a short-lived revival of the "Stan's Soapbox" column, which evolved into a question & answer format.
In his given name of Stanley Lieber, Stan Lee appears briefly in Paul Malmont's 2006 novel "The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril".
Lee and other comics creators are mentioned in Michael Chabon's 2000 novel about the comics industry The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.
On one of the last pages of "Truth: Red, White, and Black", Lee appears in a real photograph among other celebrities on a wall of the Bradley home.
In Ultimate X-Men #20, a caricature of Lee appears as a photograph next to the letter Xavier leaves for his students.
In Stan Lee Meets Superheroes, Stan Lee comes in to contact with some of his favorite creations. The series was written by Lee himself.
In Karakuridoji Ultimo a caricature of Lee in 12th century Japan as the creator of both Ultimo and Vice.

[edit] Warner/DC properties
In the original broadcast airing of the Superman: The Animated Series episode "Apokolips... Now! Part 2", an animated Stan Lee was planned to be visible mourning the death of Daniel "Terrible" Turpin, a character based on Lee's collaborator Jack Kirby. The scene would also have included such Marvel characters as the Fantastic Four, Nick Fury, and Peter Parker, as well as such Kirby DC characters as Big Barda, Scott Free, and Orion. This shot appeared in the completed episode and was aired in 7 February 1998 in WB Kids, but was later removed in the DVD release of the episode.[51]

Lee appears with director Kevin Smith and 2000s Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada in the DVD program "Marvel Then & Now: An Evening with Stan Lee and Joe Quesada, hosted by Kevin Smith".
Lee narrated the 2001 film Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV, under the pseudonym "Peter Parker."[citation needed]
One of Lee's earliest contributions to animation based on Marvel properties was narrating the 1980s Incredible Hulk animated series, always beginning his narration with a self-introduction and ending with "This is Stan Lee saying, Excelsior!" Lee had previously narrated the "Seven Little Superheroes" episode of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, which the Hulk series was paired with for broadcast.
Lee did the narration for the original 1989 X-Men animated series pilot titled Pryde of the X-Men.
Lee was interviewed on the History Channel Show Superhuman by Daniel Browning Smith, who held several Guiness Records for extreme flexibility[52] due to having Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic condition affecting collagen formation. Smith had created his own comic book to display his own struggles as an outcast for his flexibility, and legitimately surprised Lee with a quick demonstration of his talent.
In the animated series Jim Henson's Muppet Babies, Lee plays himself in a live-action scene of the "Comic Capers" episode.
Lee was an executive producer of the 1990s animated TV series Spider-Man. He appeared as himself in animated form in the series finale episode titled "Farewell, Spider-Man". Spider-Man is transported by Madame Web into the "real" world where he is a fictional character. He meets Lee and the two swing around until Spider-Man drops him off on top of a building; Madame Web appears and brings Spider-Man back to his homeworld. Realizing he is stuck on a roof, Lee muses, hoping the Fantastic Four will show up and lend a hand.
He also voices the character "Frank Elson" in an episode of Spider-Man: The New Animated Series series broadcast by MTV in 2003, and titled "Mind Games" (Parts 1 & 2, originally aired in Aug. 15 & 22, 2003).
He voiced a loading dock worker named Stan on The Spectacular Spider-Man in the episode "Blueprints".
Lee has an extensive cameo in the Kevin Smith film Mallrats. He once again plays himself, this time visiting "the" mall to sign books at a comic store. Later, he takes on the role of a sage-like character, giving Jason Lee's character, Brodie Bruce (a longtime fan of Lee's), advice on his love life. He also recorded interviews with Smith for the non-fiction video Stan Lee's Mutants, Monsters, and Marvels (2002).
Lee appeared as himself in an extended self-parodying sketch on the episode "Tapping a Hero" of Robot Chicken.
Lee appears as himself in writer-director Larry Cohen's The Ambulance (1990), in which Eric Roberts plays an aspiring comics artist.
In The Simpsons episode "I Am Furious Yellow" (April 28, 2002), Lee voices the animated Stan Lee, who is a prolonged visitor to Comic Book Guy's store ("Stan Lee came back?" "Stan Lee never left. I am starting to think his mind is no longer in mint condition.") He asks if Comic Book Guy is the stalker of Lynda Carter - the star of the 1970s show Wonder Woman - and shows signs of dementia, such as breaking a customer's toy Batmobile by trying to cram a Thing action figure into it (claiming that he "made it better"), hiding DC comics behind Marvel comics, and believing that he is the Hulk (and fails trying to become the Hulk, while Comic Book Guy comments he couldn't even change into Bill Bixby). In a later episode, Lee's picture is seen next to several others on the wall behind the register, under the heading "Banned for life".
Lee also appears as himself in the Mark Hamill-directed Comic Book: The Movie (2004), a direct-to-video mockumentary primarily filmed at the 2002 San Diego Comic-Con.
He appeared in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) as the "Three Stooges Wedding Guest", a Spaniard who learns English from watching Three Stooges shorts.
Stan Lee narrates the 2000 video game Spider-Man and the 2001 sequel Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro.
Lee is producer and host of the reality-TV show Who Wants to Be a Superhero?, which premiered on the Sci Fi Channel on July 27, 2006, and had its second season in summer, 2007.
Lee has made two appearances as a subject on To Tell the Truth: first in 1970, and again in 2001.
Lee also made an appearance on December 21, 2006, on the NBC game show Identity.
Lee voices characters in POW! Entertainment's direct-to-DVD "Stan Lee Presents" line of animated features. In Mosaic he voices the security guard Stanley at Interpol, and in The Condor he voices a candy-store owner whose granddaughter the Condor saves.
In the "Unexpected" episode of the TV science-fiction drama Heroes (2006), Lee appears as a bus driver kindly greeting Hiro Nakamura.
In the summer of 2008, Lee worked on a kids version of Who Wants To Be A Superhero?, for CBBC, which began broadcasting in the United Kingdom on January 3, 2009. He again appears via TV as a superhero godfather figure to the aspiring superheroes.

[edit] Radio
Lee recorded a public service announcement for Deejay Ra's "Hip-Hop Literacy" campaign.

[edit] Action figure
At the 2007 Comic-Con International, Marvel Legends introduced a Stan Lee action figure. The body beneath the figure's removable cloth wardrobe is re-used from the mold of a previously released Spider-Man action figure, with only minor changes.[53]

Fourth alternate costume Successfully complete the Combat Training challenge for a character to unlock his or her fourth costume. Alternately, get a "Bronze" rank in a character's Comic mission.
Hard mode Successfully complete the game on the Normal difficulty setting to unlock the Hard difficulty setting. Do not be afraid of the Hard difficulty setting. When you start a game under Hard mode, you can load your characters from a previously saved game. For example, if you have a level 50 Wolverine from Normal mode, you can start the game with him and all his powers, gear, and costumes that you have gained. It also adds five more dots to level up your powers with. If you have a character maxed out in Normal mode, there is even more room for improvement.
Easy Comic missions To complete all the Comic missions easily and unlock Silver Surfer and get gold at the same time, wait and play all the missions at the end of the game when your characters have leveled up and have decent powers. If some are still to difficult to complete, play some Versus mode missions with those characters to level them up and/or pick up some Shield Tokens to add to their costume.
Easy Iron Man Comic mission When you get to the end of the mission to battle Ultimo, run back to the door you came in. Ultimo is so big he cannot pass the edge of the room he is in. You can just keep hitting him with your ranged attacks, then when needed, fly in and collect the health and energy vials he drops.
Character specific items Character specific gear is very valuable. When picking up character specific items, such as "Iron Man's Coil", it is described as doing +3 Damage and +3 Rocket Uppercut. This is not +3 to damage for the hit; it means that it adds three dots in the Powers area. With this single item you can go from 129 Damage to 289 Damage.
Recommended team Use the following trick to make a hard to kill team. Create a team consisting of Wolverine, Blade, Luke Cage, and Ghost Rider (Bad To The Bone team). The team bonus will be that 5% of all damage will be regained as health. Also, all these characters have a way to regenerate health. Equip the following outfits. For Wolverine, Astonishing, max out Health Regen and Defense. For Blade, Ultimate, max out Health Regen and Defense. For Luke Cage, New Avengers, max out Health Regen and Defense. For Ghost Rider, Original, max out Resurrect Ally and Defense. It is also recommended that Ghost Rider be equipped with The Heart Of Mephisto (10% of attack damage turned into health) or a similar item because he is the only character without a Health Regen. Equip other characters with gear that increases defense or dodging capabilities. Not only will your team be difficult to hurt, but they will be absorbing and regenerating most of the damage they take. If a teammate dies, Ghost Rider will have about a 50% chance of resurrecting them. Note: Ghost Rider is the weak character. He does not regenerate, and if he dies resurrection is lost. Also, Wolverine will regenerate the fastest because he has an inherit ability to regenerate in addition to the suit's bonus.
For easy health, experience, energy, money, and Extreme Momentum Orbs for leveling, create a team consisting of Luke Cage, Elektra, and Dr.Strange. When they each have a full Momentum bar, get a group of enemies around you. Then, use the power. Elektra will stun all enemies with her Curse of the Hand. Then, Dr. Strange will use his Mystic Maelstrom to kill all stunned enemies, causing them to drop Extreme Momentum Orbs for each enemy killed. Luke Cage will use his Sweet Christmas to kill any of the remaining enemies, giving you +472% more money for each enemy killed in the attack sequence. This trick is especially useful for leveling characters, unlocking costumes, and maxing out stats. The best place to do this is in the Shield training simulator on the Thunderball mission. Even if you run out of time you will still get the levels and money; do not worry about killing the Boss. Just get your momentum on Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, and Elektra.

Alternate opening sequence:Allow the game to remain idle at the title screen for about twenty seconds to view an alternate opening with different dialogue and scenes.
Easy points:To achieve a high score, grab a human shield and use him. Shoot some enemies and try not to get hit. The longer you go without getting hit, the higher your points get. However, if you somehow get hit your points are rounded up and you must start again with not getting hit.
Easy style points:If you get hit once by your enemies, your style points will be on your score, and it would not be good enough for a massive score. Always take your time. Do not rush into every room because there is no time limit. If you are having difficulty shooting them, try aiming for precise headshots to kill them instantly. Use interrogations first then do the quick kill on them. Watch your back and keep an eye on enemy numbers. Be aware of where they are going to attack from and defeat multiple enemies without getting hit. This is the easiest way to achieve style points. Additionally, try the Golden Skulls special kills. White Skulls are special interrogation zones. If a mission's medal score seems to difficult for you on the stats screen, replay the level for another attempt. Use the fine aim mode for headshots. Mix up the violence in this game to achieve style points. Headshots is the best strategy to take down heavily armored opponents.
Special kills:When you grab enemies with skulls over their heads, you can get information from them. In order to do special kills, you must walk over to a purple skull shining out of the ground with the enemy. To do this, you must grab him and take him over to the purple skull. Then, use his own method.
Scared or disgusted enemies:If you get close enough (just slightly further than the Quick Kill/Grab point) an enemy will sometimes (especially in the earlier levels) back off, wave his hands as if to say "don't shoot" then say similar to "It-- it's you!!!!"; giving you time to shoot him. Also, sometimes by performing a quick kill near another enemy, sometimes they will put a hand over their mouth as though they are about to vomit, and say something similar to "I think I'm gonna be sick!" or "Oh my God!" followed by a vomiting sound. This also gives you some extra time to shoot the enemy. Note: This does not work on all Yakuza gang members.
Flashbacks:Interrogate enemies normally. If their words echoes, this indicates that you have unlocked a flashback. Replay the levels to unlock more of them.
Funeral home:When you reach the funeral home level, do not jump up and just shoot everyone. If you get out of the casket and do a quick kill on everyone in the room, you will earn a lot more points. You should keep one of them alive to use as a human shield. None of them have guns in that room.
Easy points at Stark Towers:At the end of the level, just before you destroy the helicopter and after all the enemies on the ground are dead, stand just outside the last door (when leaving the building stay to the right, but turn back towards the door). An enemy keeps respawning, and he comes out the same way every time. Grab him as soon as he comes out and take him back inside to interrogate, then kill him. Go back outside and wait to do it all over again. If done correctly, the helicopter will not hit you, and you can really rack up the point multiplier. Use all the different interrogations you can and alternate quick kills with knock outs, to boost the multiplier. You can get up to 450,000 points to spend on character upgrades by doing this about one hour.
Fisk Industries in Challenge mode:For this Challenge mode to be completed, you must kill 39 of Fisk's men, not including Bullseye, without reloading or picking up another weapon. After fighting Bullseye and after he jumps down to the next level, point your weapon upwards towards on a hole in the ceiling and shoot at the boxes. The boxes will fall down and a hidden guard will appear. He will not make himself known unless this is done. If you made it to the end of the Challenge and notice that only one guard is missing, this is where he will be.
Defeating Bullseye:When in KingPin's office, throw grenades at him. Do not try to shoot him unless you aim for the head; bullets do not hurt him. Just keep throwing grenades until he dies. Additionally, in the Fisks Industries level, you must fight someone called Bullseye. Bullseye is a hired bodyguard for the Kingpin. He is called that because he is always 100% when using weapons, even with a firearm. You cannot hit him on the body. He wears advanced armor that cannot be penetrated. His only weakness is his head. Just shoot him there. Do not stand there for more grenades to appear to throw or for use with the assault rifle's grenade launcher. Once Bullseye is defeated in stage 1, he will run to the elevator and disappear. In stage 2, you should be in a room with a nail gun interrogation and a lot of boarded up beams. Stage 2 will commence once he says "Hey Frank, about time you got here". Use the same strategy as before. Always aim for his head. Once his life is reduced to a certain point, you can move on. Eventually you should finally encounter him in Kingpin's office. Do the same thing here. Once he has no remaining energy, you have defeated him.
Defeating Bushwacker:To defeat Bushwacker you must do two things. First, aim for his head and fire. Eventually, his glasses will fall off. Once, his glasses are off it is a free for all as long as you have some flashbangs. If you do not have flashbangs, then just kill some henchmen and they will drop some. Begin launching flashbangs near Bushwacker and he will get disoriented. When he starts moving around like he is drunk, start shooting him. He will begin to fire his weapon, but most of the time he is inaccurate. He eventually will die after enough damage is taken.
Defeating the chopper at Stark Towers:When you reach this part of the level, you may be compelled to take the sniper rifle to your left. You can if desired, but it is not required. If you want to get out quick, run to the middle rock near the edge (where the chopper is flying). You will find an anti-tank launcher (rocket launcher) and what may be an unlimited ammo cache. Try to aim for the man with the rocket launcher in the chopper (usually on the right). After you hit him, keep firing missiles at the chopper. Make sure that you strafe (or at least keep moving), as there are snipers in almost all directions around you.
Defeating Jigsaw:Jigsaw is quite possibly the easiest fight in the game (if played smart). First, take out Jigsaw's jet pack. Simply walk over to a cargo crate. Make sure that you can see Jigsaw, but he cannot see or hit you. If you wait, Jigsaw will come to you. When he gets close enough, run under him. Then, just shoot his backpack and stay under Jigsaw. After a little cat and mouse, an intermission sequence will play. Jigsaw is now on foot. Jigsaw's way of defense are ten fast blasts and a large plasma ball. You will need to run in between boxes to throw him off your path. Run around until you see a guard, then finish him quick. The guard will drop a RAM explosive. These are used by walking up to a wall and pressing [Secondary Fire] once (while RAM is selected). The charge is now armed and ready for detonation. Get Jigsaw's attention by letting him see you. He will run after you. When he gets near the RAM, press your [Secondary Fire] again (maintain safe distance) and an explosion will blow off a piece of Jigsaw's armor. Repeat this procedure until Jigsaw falls to your punishment. Additionally, when you are fighting Jigsaw, get under him when he is in the air and shoot his jetpack. When he turns around, get behind him and shoot him again. Plant mines on the ground and detonate them when he walks by to finish him.
Defeating the Russian on the island:When you get off of the gondola, take a right into the shed. Do not go to the launch pad yet. Get the ammunition for the sniper rifle. Leave the shed and make a right to the steps to the missile launch pad. Walk up the steps and the Russian will say "We have to stop meeting like this, Big Boy!". He will stay on the catwalk above, throwing flaming barrels at you. Shooting him is useless. Watch the Russian through your more precise aiming (it is easier this way). When he lifts a barrel, he will walk a little way, lift it above his head, and it will catch fire. Shoot the barrel while it is on fire before he throws it at you. It will explode in his face. After two or three explosions, guards will begin to appear from the right and left sides of the map. Take them out if they give you a problem, however try to focus on the Russian. After the Russian's life gets half-way down, an intermission sequence featuring him catching ablaze will play. He will then jump down and chase after you. Get him to chase you into the piles of barrels scattered in the corners of the map. There is one barrel in each pile that will light (usually the brightest one). Get the Russian to walk into the barrel and it will ignite. Then, shoot the barrel to blow it up on the Russian. Be careful not to get too close or you will sustain damage. After about four to five explosions, he will be defeated. Note: If the Russian runs into a guard, the guard will also catch fire.
Captain American and Sunfire reference:In the Takagi Building, after you interrogate a member of the Eternal Sun he runs into the bathroom to distract Yasuke. He then asks Yasuke who would win in a fight between Captain America and Captain Japan. Yasuke says that there is no Captain Japan, that his name is Sunfire, and that Sunfire would probably win. Captain America is from the Captain America/Avengers comics and Sunfire is from the X-Men comics.
Comic book reference:In the Funeral Home level, one of the Gnucci's tells you that you can get in a room by tilting the statue in the bedroom. The statue is that of a polar bear. This is a tribute to Garth Ennis' "Welcome Back, Frank" comic, because Ma Gnucci is mauled by a polar bear in the zoo after Frank punches it in the face.
Daredevil references:When in Lucky's bar, two men will be talking. One asks "Who do you think would win in a fight between Daredevil and Sonny Corleone?" The other one will say, "You idiot. Daredevil's a comic book character." Daredevil comics were made by the same company that made The Punisher comics. The irony is that later The Punisher's lawyer is Matt Murdoch (the real life identity of Daredevil). Also, later two Yakuza will be talking about Daredevil talking on one hundred of their men hopped up on some drugs. Additionally, after the battle with Bullseye, Frank's blind lawyer Matt Murdock (Daredevil's alter ego) comes in and Frank fires him.
Half-Life reference:At the beginning of the Stark Towers level when the Yakuza start their attack, the scientists working behind the glass talk about an interdimensional portal, and one refers to the other as Doctor Freeman. Gordon Freeman is the main character in the popular Half-Life game series by Valve Software.
Hulk reference:Go to any laptop during game play and look directly at the screen. The figure of the Hulk will appear, flexing.
Iron Man reference:When the chopper first starts shooting at you, Iron Man flies in to give you a quick heads up. He then flies around the corner of the building.
Programming reference:In Fisk Industries, when you interrogate the man to ask how to stop the turrets, he tells you the access code is "217". That is the area code for Champaign, IL, where the game was developed.
Sesame Street reference:If you choose to side with the Mafia at the slaughterhouse, when you get to a certain point you will hear two men. One will say "Damn they killed Ernie!" The other will say, "First Bert, now Ernie. We'll get those bastards." Bert and Ernie are the names of Sesame Street characters.
Spider-Man reference:During the intermission sequence immediately after the Crackhouse level, look closely at the license plate of the car that tries to hit Frank. Notice that it reads "ASM129". The Punisher first made his appearance in "Amazing Spider Man issue #129".
Writer reference:The first guard you encounter in Ryker's will be held up by a prisoner. The prisoner refers to him by the name "Dixon". He is named after Chuck Dixon, a writer for the Punisher comics, Daredevil comics, and Marvel Knights comics.

Webswing upgrades Locate the Human Torch icon on top of the Baxter Building in Manhattan; it's the tall white building. He will be there depending on how many races you have acheived medals in.
Full health Note: This trick requires at least one additional costume. When low on health, pause the game and choose the "Unlockables" selection, then select "Costumes". Change costumes to have full health when resuming the game.
Avoid falling damage If you cannot web swing when you fall off a building, double jump just as you are about to hit the ground.
No police or military While playing as Venom in Free Roam mode, destroy something to enter a mini-game where the police and military will try to kill Venom. Then, pause the game and choose the "Unlockables" selection. A message will appear saying you will exit your mission if you continue. Confirm to exit the mission, then exit back out of the "Unlockables" screen and return to the game. Venom can now destory anything without the police or military appearing and attacking him.
Easier Combat Tours The last battle of a Combat Tour is the hardest. If you end the second to the last battle with most of your health, do not pick up the health icon that appears. Go to the last battle and fight. If you are low on health, simply webswing back to the area of the previous fight and the health icon will still be there. Take it and return to complete the last challenge. Also, make sure to spread out the enemies and try to lure some of them to other areas. Some will follow and some will stay behind making it easier to fight them.
Change time of day While playing as Spider-Man or Venom in Free Roam mode, pause the game and select the "Switch Hero" option. When the next stage loads, it may be a different time of day. Keep switching the hero until it is the time of day desired.
Leg throw While standing idle and facing an enemy, press Grab(2). Spider-Man will leap over, grab them by the head with his legs and flip them over.
Wall run Spider-Man can wall run, but not quite as long as he did in Spider-Man 2. While webswinging towards a wall, tap Grab just before hitting the wall and press the direction you want to run. Note: Do not hold the button. Spider-Man will run for awhile before crawling.
Fight Shocker again You can see Shocker even after you have defeated him. Sometimes in a City Event, Shocker will appear and you must to fight him. It will not be a Boss battle; it will be like a fight against a street thug, who is much more powerful and has some very powerful blasters.
Defeating Beetle with Spider-Man Wait on the bottom level of the construction site and eventually Beetle will come to you. When he appears, attack him with punches and kicks and repeat as necessary to defeat him.
Defeating Beetle with Venom Use the camera lock feature so you will always have Beetle in your sights. Wait for him to zoom close to you and use a tentacle attack on him when he is close to you. When he puts up the forcefield and opens the pits, run to where he is hovering and strike him with a tentacle attack. Make sure to avoid his various projectile attacks by jumping over them.
Defeating Carnage with Venom Use tentacle attacks to keep Carnage at a distance. If you can get close, use claw attacks which are more powerful. Feed on the policemen on the scene to regain health. When Carnage escapes to the next room, go to the door with the blue circle and press Grab to start a door opening mini-game. Carnage will recharge his health a few times during this fight so continue to feed on the policemen. Watch for Carnage's spinning tentacle attack and jump out of the way.
Completing Electro chase with Venom Stay as close to Electro as possible. When he is about to do his large electric ball attack, do a super jump into the air. Stay on top of buildings for the most part and only go to the ground when you have to feed. Try and feed when Electro is near the ground, readying his large electric ball attack, as he is not moving at that point. Just stay far enough away so the attack won't hurt you. When Electro goes to the top of buildings, wait on the building below him and out of the way of the attack. Also, when Electro says "going down", try not to go right down to the street with Venom or Electro will be too far away. Use the zip move to grab onto buildings when falling towards the street so you will not fall too far and lose him. Just continue to follow him until the level is over.
Defeating Electro with Venom Smash the neon signs in Times Square by jumping towards them and using a tentacle attack or by throwing cars at them. Smash a few signs and then pick up cars and throw them at Electro. Try to smash as many signs as possible, as Electro uses them to recharge. When Electro goes near Spidey, throw cars at him. Also, bust open the fire hydrants to cause water to shoot out, as the water will harm Electro. Once all of the neon signs are smashed, throw cars at Electro until the battle is over.
Defeating Green Goblin with Spider-Man Use the camera lock feature. Jump over the Green Goblin's fireballs. Only get in close for an attack when the Green Goblin is no longer on fire. Retreat and repeat the process for both phases of this Boss battle.
Defeating Rhino in first battle Jump on his back by pressing Grab, then hit him repeatedly. Jump off just as he starts to fall over. Run over to the wet cement and try to get Rhino to charge at you. When he is stuck in the cement, jump over to the crane and press Grab to use the wrecking ball.
Defeating Rhino in second battle Dodge his attacks and jump on his back by pressing Grab when his back stops sparking (and turns blue). Hit him repeatedly and jump off when he is about to fall over. Repeat until he goes down.
Defeating Sable with Peter Parker Move around as much as possible getting in some hits when you can and then retreating to a safe distance. Defeat her henchmen as soon as they arrive.
Defeating Venom in first battle with Spider-Man Punch and kick Venom with the 4 combo attack ability (or just punches and kicks), then immediately jump out of the way. Continue this until the fight ends.
Defeating Venom in second battle with Spider-Man Attack Venom as you have in previous battles. Get close for 4 to 5 hit combos and then retreat. Jump over tentacle attacks and other projectiles like cars.
Defeating Venom in third battle with Spider-Man Attack Venom from behind when he is at the helicopter. You can usually get in 5 hits safely before he attacks. Once you attack him, use webzip to get as far away as possible. Venom will then jump towards you and either attack or throw objects. Get in quickly and unleash another flurry of combo hits on him. He will then return to the helicopter and you must repeat this process, only later you will have to avoid the fire that spreads on the roof.
Defeating Wolverine with Venom Use tentacle attacks, throws, and claw attacks against Wolverine. Use the bar patrons to feed on while Wolverine is stunned to fill up your energy.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off reference Near the beginning of the game where Spider-Man has to go to school (and just before the race with the Human Torch) wander around the city and explore. Spider-Man will make comments like, "I need to get to class" and "I really have to get to school." One comment is something along the lines of, "I cant miss anymore class. I've been absent nine times... nine... times." This is in reference to a scene from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off in which the principal is taking note of the main character's habit of skipping class.

Saving anywhere:Use the Blink Portal to save the game almost anywhere. You do not need to wait for an Xtraction point. Just open up a Blink Portal when you want to save then use the Xtraction point in the Sanctuary.
Easy experience: For easy leveling up, go to the Holding Pen level. There is a location where enemies keep teleporting onto the screen; it is just before the last area entrance. Note: If you stay too long without saving, your game will freeze.
Easy items:In Act 2 after you rescue Beast on Mikhail's Warship, Blink will open a portal back to Avalon. Go through the portal to Avalon then immediately return to the warship. The scene of rescuing Beast will play again, and the ship will be undamaged. You can go back and get all the items again. Repeat this as many times as desired. Additionally, to get easy Techbits, health packs, energy packs, and items, return to the top of Apocalypse's tower where you fight Archangel. Smash all of the containers to get random free items. Repeat this as many times as desired.
Have Gambit and Toad on your team. Have Gambit use Prince of Thieves, and Toad use Plunder (this requires at least two extreme points). Do this when near a weapons cache and you can get about five times the amount of what you would normally get. This includes health/energy packs, and Techbits, but you still only get one special item.
Good combo: This combo works when you have Wolverine and Juggernaut on your team. With Juggernaut, walk over to Wolverine and pick him up, just as you would do to a chair or other item. When you throw Wolverine, he will do a diving attack to nearby enemies. This also works if you need to send Wolverine over large holes.
Strong Gambit: Once your characters get to about level 30, use Sunfire, Bishop, Toad, and Gambit as your team. The idea is to pump up Gambit as much as possible. Put as much of the stats as possible into each ability as follows: Sunfire = Flaming Fury, Bishop = Energy Fury, Toad = Secretion, Gambit = Energy Form. Also, put an extra 6 or 7 stats into each characters Mutant Mastery so that they will recover EP faster. During the game, activate all the abilities listed above and switch to Gambit. He will be able to run very fast and be super strong. Eventually he will have +200% movement, +400% or more attack and many of damage and defense bonuses. Also, because they regain their EP fast, you can reuse the abilities as soon as the affects wear off.
Strong Iceman:Iceman is the strongest character in the game. If you boost him correctly, he can kill most of his opponents with just a single hit on melee attack. Distribute his Status Points wisely, developing more on his Focus and Speed. At his Projectiles Mutant Powers, concentrate on his Cold Crush, and a little in Freeze Beam and Ice Slide. Do not spend Skills Points in Boost Mutant Powers, as they are useless. Also, if the rest of this is done correctly, Iceman will grow strong enough to easily fight alone. Spend the maximum you can in his Passive Skills, particularly in Ice Combat and Cold Mastery. Get the Danger Room Disk: Challenge - Iceman, and get and equip his Signature Unique Item, Cryogenic Booster. That brings a very good trait, Double Cold Damage. As for other equipment, put some that give bonus to Damage (not Energy Damage, Electric Damage, or Radiation Damage). If done correctly, Iceman can hit easily his enemies (because of the high Speed), hit lots of enemies with the Cold Crush Projectile Mutant Power, and will inflict lots of damage. For example, you can do 500 and even more damage with melee attack, depending on your level, because of the Passive Skills, Ice Combat, Cold Mastery, and the Cryogenic Booster Signature Unique Item.
Recommended team:Having two blasters (for example, Magneto) and two brawlers (for example, Wolverine) works well. The following team is highly useful, because there are times where you will need a mutant with super strength to move an object out of the way. If you need a bridge formed, use Magneto. If you need a flyer, both Magneto and Ironman will work. The heavy metal group is Colossus, Juggernaut, Ironman, and Magneto.
Iceman is the most powerful character in the game; keep him on your team. The other three characters are recommended for a great team:
Iron Man: He is a combination of all types of characters (good at melee and ranged attacks, can fly, can smash easily and push or lift massive objects). Expend Skills Points in his Mutant Attack Power Gamma Bolts (if the Projectile hits a wall, it comes back), and all his Passive Skills.
Nightcrawler: He has very fast melee attacks and can do a lot of damage if you expend lots of Skill Points in the Mutant Power Attack Teleport Frenzy and all his Passive Skills, Sword Mastery (you do not need to improve this very much), Teleport Mastery, Uncanny Reflexes, and Critical Strike. Also, his Xtreme Attack, Master Of Chaos, is the best against Bosses (you can do nine hits when at maximum level) and PVP (Player VS Player).
Professor X: He cannot do more damage than Iceman, but is faster (because of the Passive Skill Clairvoyance) and all his skills are very useful.
If Iron Man and Professor X are not unlocked, try these characters:Bishop: A good choice if you do not have Professor X. He can even become more powerful than Professor X. He can inflict even more damage and has Passive Skills that make him fast (Power Trip) and gives energy damage (Energy Combat). Develop this Mutant Power Attacks: Full Auto, Bio Beam, and Bio Blast. However, Professor X is better because of his low cost of EP for Mutant Attacks and walks and melee attacks faster.
Cyclops: If you do not have Iron Man, use Cyclops. He can inflict much more damage with ranged attack than Iron Man (but can only hit one or two, while Iron Man can hit five or six) with the Mutant Power Attacks Fusion Beam and Polarized Beam. Also, improve his Visor Upgrade and Mutant Master as much as possible. However, Iron Man is better because he can do more damage with melee attacks, can fly, and lift massive objects.
A great team for Story mode is Colossus, Sunfire, Gambit, and Iceman. Colossus is strong and has a powerful attack. This allows you to avoid using a special attack. Sunfire has fire power, can hit people from far away, and can fly. Gambit can hit from far away, is fast, and has strong attacks. Iceman has ice power, can hit from far away, build bridges, and fly with his ice slide.
Another great team is Iron Man, Deadpool, Juggernaught, and Professor X. Professor X can hit enemies hard and fast. Iron Man can fly and has a good ranged attack. Deadpool is a good melee brawler. Juggernaut has the best Xtreme power in the game, Path Of Destruction.
Final area First, step into the power chamber in the middle of the vault of ages. Since there is only a limited amount of time you have to use the harmonic powers, choose a faster character to do this. There is a yellow meter that will show you how much harmonic power time you have remaining. Go straight up or straight down to reach the generators. The downward path has a small maze in it. Go right instead of left. At the generator, Apocalypse will be waiting. You must beat him up before you can destroy the generator. Destroy the generator and repeat the same process with the other one. It does not have a maze, and it will be a straight shot directly to it. Just like before, Apocalypse will be waiting for you at the generator. After destroying the power of the harmonic machine, he will bring statues of the horsemen to life. You must focus your attacks on the horsemen and get them out of the way before tackling Apocalypse. When you kill the horsemen, they will return to statue form. Then, kill Apocalypse twice to complete the game. Note: Make sure you have a full load of health and energy packs before attempting this.

Recommended teamUse the following trick to make a hard to kill team.

Defeating Doc Ock Save all of the people on the train and complete the other levels until you get to the level where he recreates his machine. To complete this level you must destroy all of the power generators. To do this, follow the cord that is streaked with orange (or yellow) and black. You will then get to the generators. Just kick them to destroy them. His shield will then go away and you must take out all of his legs; however, be careful. Then to defeat him, keep punching and kicking away.
Defeating Mysterio You first need to know which hologram is him. To do that, you look at the faces behind all of the holograms. The one that is smiling will have the real Mysterio directly in front of it. Do not touch him while the three fireballs are orbiting his head. When he tries to shoot you and no longer has them orbiting his head, go in and hit him. When the fireballs return, back off. Keep repeating this. Note: Do not forget about the other holograms; they are just as powerful.
Defeating Rhino To defeat Rhino, all you have to do is jump. While you are in the air, press L. Then, wait for him to run into the wall and get some combos on him. When he runs into the next room, do the same. Run around the poles when he gets the big pipe.
Defeating Shocker To defeat Shocker, you must let Rhino knock down the platform he is standing on (see the "Defeating Rhino" hint). Then, lock in on him with the Spidey target and either blind him or hold L and press Triangle. Keep doing that and try not to die.
Defeating Vulture Stay in the construction area on top of the building. Remain in between the two buildings that Vulture cannot get to you. After awhile, his health will get down to green. He will land, and this is when you can attack him. Do it quickly; you only get five to ten seconds to punch him.

Good combo This combo works when you have Wolverine and Juggernaut on your team. With Juggernaut, walk over to Wolverine and pick him up, just as you would do to a chair or other item. When you throw Wolverine, he will do a diving attack to nearby enemies. This also works if you need to send Wolverine over large holes.
Strong Gambit Once your characters get to about level 30, use Sunfire, Bishop, Toad, and Gambit as your team.
Strong Iceman Iceman is the strongest character in the game.
Recommended team Having two blasters (for example, Magneto) and two brawlers (for example, Wolverine) works well.
If Iron Man and Professor X are not unlocked, try these characters:
Bishop: A good choice if you do not have Professor X.
